PM to discuss LPG pricing

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is planning a special meeting with the National Energy Policy Council, to discuss about the pricing of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

He said yesterday that he was concerned with the price, given the recent decline in global prices.

He noted that he would consider all data before deciding if the pricing structure could be altered.

Energy experts, including former Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand, suggested the government floated the LPG price now that the the global price is falling to the domestic price level.

During the time when energy prices skyrocketed, the government heavily subsidised the gas price by maintaining the domestic price at one third of actual prices, at the peak. The Energy Ministry earlier planned to discourage the use of LPG in vehicles by raising the gas price for transportation use. However, the plan has not yet been executed.
