Big brother had nothing to do with reinstatement

Big brother had nothing to do with reinstatement

Pol Gen Patcharawat

Pol General Phatcharawat Wongsuwan, who returned to work on Monday as police commissioner-general, said he did not think his reinstatement as police chief had anything to do with his elder brother, Pravit, being given the post of Defence Minister.

He added that he was also not worried about pro-Thaksin demonstrators taking to the streets, saying that he would maintain the strategy of patience, negotiation and non-violence. He was in power when the October 7 clashes took place between police officers and the anti-government protesters.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he would look into the factual details about the reinstatement and see if there could be any problems stemming from it later.

On Sunday, former caretaker prime minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul signed Phatcharawat's reinstatement, cancelling an order dated November 28, moving the police chief to an inactive post at the PM's Office and made inspector-general Prateep Tanprasert caretaker police commissioner-general.

In related news, top brass from the armed forces yesterday met Pravit at the Army Club to congratulate him on his new post. Included in the meeting were Defence Permanent Secretary General Apichart Phenkitti, Supreme Commander General Songkitti Jakrabatra, Army Commander-in-Chief General Anupong Paochinda, Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Kamthorn Pumhiran and Air Force Commander-in-Chief ACM Itthiporn Supawong.
