Natthanan's gold rush

The water-babe from Bangkok gags fourth medal

Bangkok failed to win a single gold in the track-and-field competition yesterday but kept their top position in the medal standings in the on-going National Games in Phitsanulok.

Speedy Sitthichai Suwornpratheep of Samut Prakarn made it a double sprint gold yesterday when, fresh from winning the 100m gold on Wednesday, he claimed his second in the 200m, crossing the finish line in 21.31 seconds. Suphan Buri's Orranut Klomdee proved her class in the women's 200m, storming home first in 24.11.

Nakhon Pathom and hosts Phitsanulok shared two gold apiece in the track-and-field events, where a total of 11 golds were at stake yesterday.

Bangkok's swimmers continued their exceptional form in the pool, capturing five out of the seven golds on offer yesterday. Chiang Mai took the remaining two.

Water-babe Natthanan Chankrajang from Bangkok, who won four gold medals in the SEA Games last year and eight golds in the Thailand University Games the same year, snatched two golds yesterday, including the 50m freestyle event with a Games record of 26.72secs. So far she has won four golds in the Games.

Judokas from Bangkok and the host province shared the honours with two golds each, while Krabi's ballroom dancers grabbed two of five golds on offer. In the weightlifting competition, Suthiporn Wattana-kasikam from Nakhon Sawan, the gold medallist at last year's SEA Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, powered his way to the three golds on offer in the men's 94kg event.

Suthiporn not only retained the title, but also smashed his previous Games records in all three disciplines by lifting 160kg in the snatch and 191kg in jerk for a record total of 351kg. Nakhon Si Thammarat's Watcharawadee Rattanachuang claimed three golds in the women's 75kg division, with Chon Buri snatching two through Wiriya Suwanrat in the women's 69kg class.

At press time, Bangkok lead the table with 41 gold, 30 silver and 31 bronze medals, followed by Chon Buri (19-13-19) and Chiang Mai (13-14-20). Nakhon Ratchasima are trailing in fourth place with 10 golds, with hosts Phitsanuloke in fifth.
