Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will give an award of Bt100,000 to any district that can achieve a 70 per cent turnout of voters in the upcoming byelection, a BMA top official said yesterday.

BMA will also give to any district Bt20,000 for every one per cent increase in the number of voters compared to the latest city governor election on October 5 apart from awarding them bronze shield for one to five per cent increase in the number of voters, silver shield for six to 10 per cent increase and gold shield for over 10 per cent increase, BMA permanent secretary Pongsak Semsan said yesterday after a meeting with heads of its departments and districts to prepare for the next election.

"We are collaborating with every mobile phone operator to alert four million voters to turn out on January 11 next year by sending SMS," he said.

Moreover, BMA will send its mobile campaign units to popular tourism spots, including Pattaya, ChaUm, Khao Yai and Phitsanulok during the New Year festival to meet Bangkokians who will spend their long holidays at these places.

Election billboards will be also placed in countries popular among Thai tourists when celebrating the New Year to encourage them to return home to cast their vote after New Year.

ML Nattakorn Devakula, a Bangkok gubernatorial hopeful, yesterday met and greeted factory workers in Bangkok Noi district and promised to upgrade their quality of life by having municipality officers patrol isolated areas and to give low income workers access to health care centres.

Another candidate Yuranun Pamornmontri said he would provide different activities for the elderly and support private companies that run businesses related to taking care of senior citizens.

He went to a golf club in Ngam Wong Wan area with his mother.
