Govt to aim at building mass support in quelling southern violence

Violence in the Deep South has the economic, cultural and education dimensions which are beyond the measures being carried out by the military and the police, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said in an interview with Channel 7.

The government intends to fill in the gap left out by the peace-keeping forces, Abhisit said.

He said he will designate the agency to ensure justice and strategic coordination prevailing over the strife-torn areas.

The unrest will not end unless the government can win the mass support and this can be achieved by bringing about sustainable development with due respects to the identity, traditions and faith of the local people, he said.

He voiced concern that the southern situation has the potential to deteriorate even though military and police forces have been more effective in fighting terror attacks.
