Chuan gained office as Thailand's premier in that year when the country and the Asian region had entered a severe economic downturn.
Chuan, also a former Democrat leader, told Abhisit the country had been hit today not only by financial crisis but also suffered from social division.
"It is not easy to administer a country during this period of difficulty. Everybody has to work hard and sacrifice for the sake of the country," Chuan said.
Chuan's comments came as Abhisit defeated Puea Pandin leader Pracha Phromnok in a Parliamentary vote, to make him the prime minister-elect. Abhisit came to Chuan to seek advice and was encouraged to build up unity and strength among the coalition parties.
"It is an opportunity for the Democrat Party to prove itself. To run a coalition government, you have to be fair to all coalition parties," Chuan was quoted as telling Abhisit. The government needs non-MPs to be in the government, Chuan said.
The Prime Minister-elect thanked all MPs and people who supported him in his bid to become the new leader.
Speaking after his win over Puea Pandin leader Pracha Phromnok in Parliament, Abhisit said he would like to extend his gratitude to the MPs who voted for him and the people who have trust in him.
He declined to comment on the current economic and political situation, saying he would wait until he got royal endorsement.
