EC asked to probe Newin's role in forming new govt

A Pheu Thai Party MP filed a petition Thursday asking for the Election Commission to investigate the role of banned politician Newin Chidchob in the recent political development.

Chiang Mai MP Surapong Towijakchaikul said the pictures of Newin hugging with Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva in the media could be used as proof of Newin's unlawful involvement in forming a government.

Executives of any dissolved political party are stripped for electoral rights for five years. They are prohibited from involvement in founding of a political party or being a party's executive.

Moreover, Surapong asked the EC to investigate former Chart Thai Party adviser Sanan Kachornprasart's announcement that the Democrat would not field candidates to compete with former government coalition parties' in byelections if it was illegal lobbying.

Surapong said former Thaksin Shinawatra's phoningin to address his supporters was legal while it was not a government formation as the Democrats and Newin.

However, anyone can file a lawsuit if he can prove that the banned executives of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai intervened in formation of previous Cabinets, Surapong said.

Pheu Thai is the substitute for the disbanded People Power Party, which earlier was the reincarnation of the defunct Thai Rak Thai Party.
