Reid interested to be Sunderland manager

Thailand's football coach Peter Reid dropped a bombshell by saying that he would be interested in returning to Sunderland as manager to replace Roy Keane.

Even though the veteran coach, currently on national duty in the Asean Football Federation's Suzuki Cup, had earlier confirmed to local media that he intends to honour the contract he signed in September, there are reports on the Internet about his desire to return to England.

According to the Soccernet website, Reid, who managed the Black Cats between 1995 and 2002, not only expressed his interest in the job left vacant following Keane's sudden resignation last week but also claimed that there was a clause in his contract that allows him to return to England.

Clause in the contract

"I would be interested," Reid was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

"Everyone aspires to work in England. It's the place to be. The players here dream about it and I know I won't be working abroad forever.

"There is a clause in my contract which allows me |to speak to English clubs if they show interest, so that would be up to [Sunderland chairman] Niall Quinn.

"I do know Niall well. We speak occasionally and he invited me to their first home game of the season against Liverpool. I had two seventh-place finishes, which I think were the best since the war, before coming fourth from bottom. "My being linked with the job may not please all the fans, but I left the club in a better state than when I arrived and I'd be confident of success again," said Reid.

Worawi reluctant

Worawi Makudi, the Football Association of Thailand president, was reluctant to confirm whether the 52-year-old had such a clause in his contract.

"I don't think he will [go to Sunderland]. But I have no comment about it. I will have to check all the details before I can say anything."

Asked whether Reid has a clause in his contract allowing him to return to England, Worawi replied: "For holiday, yes."
