Cabinet approves Bt1.9 bn budget to aid tourists

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Bt1.9 billion budget, to finance the efforts in assisting stranded tourists during the shutdown of Bangkok airports.

It was estimated that 350,000 foreign tourists were stranded in Thailand when the airports were shut down during Nov 25 and Dec 3, and about 1,000 Thai travellers were stranded overseas.

It also pronounced Jan 2 as a holiday, in the move to encourage provincial people to go back home at times when most of foreign tourists disappear from the tourism scene.

The resolution effectively extends the New Year holiday period which starts from Dec 31.
