Briefs: Bangladeshis cancel Thai, Indian travel plans



Bangladeshis are cancelling their bookings for travel to major tourist destinations Thailand and India, due to political unrest in Bangkok and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, local tour operators said last week.

"At least 95 per cent of the advance bookings that we received ear¬lier have been cancelled due to the prevailing situations in Bangkok and Mumbai," said Iftakhar Alam Bhuiyan, CEO of New Discovery Tours and Logistic, a major tour operator that organises overseas travel.

He said the operators faced huge losses in turnover due to the problems in Thailand and India, as their major revenue is normally generated at this time of year. - The Daily Star, Asia News Network

Five apply for PWO presidency

The Public Warehouse Organisation, a stateowned enterprise under the Commerce Ministry, has received five applications for the post of president.

One of them is currently secretary to the chairman of the PWO board, Thirachai Wutthitham, and another is a former member of the People Power Party, recently dissolved for election fraud. - The Nation

Spark opens offices in Vietnam

International public relations agency Spark Communications has opened offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in a bid to tap one of the largest emerging communications markets in the region.

The Thaibased company said it would focus on key market seg¬ments such as healthcare, financial services, real estate, consumer, aviation, logistics, travel and tourism, as well as the IT industry.

Emirates back to full Bangkok service

Emirates is reinstating its Suvarnabhumi Airport operations on the DubaiBangkokSydneyAuckland route today.

"Our first priority is to clear the backlog of passengers stranded in Bangkok, after which we will accept new bookings. Customers stranded in Bangkok should contact the Emirates' Bangkok office to register for the first available flight, and make a firm booking prior to arriving at the airport," said the Dubaibased airline. - The Nation
