Additional 600,000 to be unemployed: NESDB

Nearly 600,000 workers will be laid off early next year, which would raise the number of the unemployed to 900,000 or 2-2.5 per cent of total workforce, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board.

Suwannee Khamman, deputy secretary-general of the economic think tank, noted that this finding excludes the possible layoff as a result of the shutdown of Bangkok airports.

"Yet, we believe that the situation in 2009 would be better than in 1998, when unemployment rate reached 4.4 per cent of workforce," she said. In 2001, unemployment rate stood at 3.3 per cent.
