His Majesty the King still had a high fever and a sore throat yesterday, according to the first statement by the Royal Household Bureau about his latest illness.

His Majesty the King still had a high fever and a sore throat yesterday, according to the first statement by the Royal Household Bureau about his latest illness.

No bacterial infection was found in his blood or phlegm, and he was able to take soft food, said the statement, released yesterday evening.

On Wednesday night the King had a sore throat and difficulty swallowing. His temperature was slightly higher than normal. His doctors gave him medication to treat the conditions.

His Majesty still had a sore throat when he woke up on Thursday morning, according to the statement. He had difficulty swallowing his food, so his doctors decided on intravenous feeding and saline solution.

Yesterday his temperature fell in the morning and rose again in the evening.

The King could take some soft food. Results of the checks on his blood and phlegm found no bacterial infection, the Royal Household Bureau said in its statement.

His illness was cited as a reason for His Majesty's failure to appear at the annual gathering of senior officials and dignitaries on Thursday on the eve of his birthday.
