AIRPORT CRISIS

Olarn leads the tourism-aiding team

The Cabinet on Wednesday appointed Deputy Prime Minister Olarn Chaipravat to lead a committee to alleviate the impacts from the closure of the two Bangkok airports.

The committee would look into the problems of tourists/travellers as well as private business operators.

"The government needs to restore the normal condition as soon as possible. Right now, as an interim government, we don't have much power. This needs the new government. In the short term, what's important is to cure the tourism-related problems as well as restoring confidence in economy, tourism as well as the national image," said Deputy Finance Minister Pradit Pataraprasit.

He noted that the committee would win some financial backing from the central government budget.

At the special meeting, the Cabinet maintained the 2009 spending plan. Chaovarat Charnveerakul was appointed acting prime minister.
