Airport negotiation with PAD fails

Acting Suvarnabhumi Airport director Serirat Prasutanont said the airport could not be re-opened at 7 am as planed because negotiations with the People's Alliance for Democracy which blocked the exits and entrances of the airport was not yet successful.

Federation of Thai Industries vice chairman Thanit Sorat aaid the shutting down of Suvarnabhumi Airport would cost damage to air cargo up to Bt1 billion per day.

He said the PAD protest was adding salt to injuries to the country's ecomony that was already hard hit by the world recession.

He called for a House dissolution but before the general election was called the PAD must agree to accept the new elected government no matter which party would be the core.

More than 2,000 passengers - both checking in and departing - that were left stranded at the airport are leaving to close by hotels with assistance from airport officials.

A source from Bangkok Airways said Bangkok Airways had cancelled 24 domestic and international flights that were scheduled to leave Suvarnabhumi Airport before noon of Wednesday.

The airline is still considering whether to cancel the flights that leaves the airport after 12 am. Passengers can call number 1771 or 02-2658777

AirAsia Thailand also has also cancelled 28 flights leaving Suvarnabhumi. Passengers can call 02-515-9999 for details.

Airport of Thailand Plc estimated that the PAD protest had cost the airport at least Bt50 million in airline parking fees alone; this excludes the damage to various airlines.
