House to defy protesters

The House will today convene its weekly session as scheduled in defiance of anti-government protests which brought about the cancellation of the parliamentary meeting on Monday, coalition chief whip Withaya Buranasiri said yesterday.

"The House session will proceed to debate a number of legislation drafts on Wednesday and Thursday," Withaya said, dismissing concern that protesters might again blockade Parliament.

Withaya said lawmakers might file a police complaint accusing the People's Alliance for Democracy of obstructing their legislative work. The PAD's siege on Parliament might be construed as an act of treason, he said.

He voiced optimism that an extraordinary parliamentary meeting would be convened on December 8 to 9 in lieu of Monday's cancelled session. Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva should be in a position to convince the PAD not to repeat the siege, he said.
