Ceramic workers plan protest in Lampang

At least 5,000 workers at Lampang's ceramic plants are planning to stage a protest on November 29, to pressure for the government's assistance as economic crisis is hitting the industry, said a plant owner who asked not to be named.

He noted that chief among the measures, the government needs to delay the hike in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which is widely used by the factories. He said if the prices are jacked up, over 200 ceramic plants will be shut down.

It is expected that LPG price for industrial and transportation use would be raised by Bt6 by the end of November.

Atiphum Kamthornvorarin, chief of Lampang's Federation of Thai Industries, said ceramic producers are suffering from a continued decline in orders. Meanwhile, small and medium-sized operators are running out of cash. He said that they would gradually shut down business if the economic conditions do not improve in the second quarter of 2009.
