Taxi drivers petition LPG price hike

Siam Taxi Co-operative Ltd Chairman Vitoon Naewpanich and about 10 representatives of taxi clubs on Wednesday submitted a petition to Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, asking for the suspension of a hike in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price.

They asked the government to review the Cabinet's resolution to raise the price by Bt6 per kg in three months. They voiced opposition to the hike in gas price for transportation use, saying that the gas for household and transportation uses come from the same source. It also urged PTT Plc to invest more in natural gas, to cope with the rising number of vehicles. Meanwhile, PTT is required to publicise LPG import data. The Energy Ministry is asked to reveal the information on smuggled gas to neighbouring countries.

They also asked for the establishment of a committee to consider the price hike.

About 40,000 taxis are now driven by LPG.
