Court case opens against accused in NBT raid

Court case opens against accused in NBT raid

Public prosecutors yesterday filed charges against 82 so-called Sriwichai warriors in the Criminal Court for their alleged raid on the state-run NBT television station in August and the unlawful detention of its staff.

The court ordered the 82 suspects to enter their pleas today.

The group, led by Thanet Khamchum, were charged with an unlawful gathering to commit crimes and disturbances, as well as carrying firearms in a public place.

They were accused of violating 12 articles of the Criminal Code, violating the firearms act, broadcasting act and the anti-narcotics act. One suspect was allegedly found in possession of illegal drugs.

The suit said the 82 suspects planned the raid on the NBT station late in August and broke into it on the night of the 25th.

It alleged they damaged the doors to the building, the electricity control system, the telephone and computer system as well as closed-circuit TV system - causing damage worth some Bt612,000.

The suit also alleged the suspects detained Tuangporn Asavawilai and Jirayu Huansup, both staffers of the station, unlawfully against their will and disrupted the station's broadcast.
