Labour Ministry taps Bt1.5 bn to aid workers

Labour Minister Uraiwan Thienthong said that the ministry is asking for Bt1.5 billion from the Bt100 billion extra budget, the amount that is sufficient to support at least 60,000 workers.

She said after the meeting with officials on Monday that under the budget, it would entail the employment of 7,000 fresh graduates. On discussion was also the proposed establishment of the emergency fund for the unemployed.

The Social Security Office reported that during January to August, 127,238 workers have been laid off by 11,598 operators, or 15,905 workers a month on average. There is a tendency that more workers would be laid off as Thailand's exports are hit hard by lowering demands overseas.
