Somchai sticks with Thaksin populist policy

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat on Monday injected Bt6.5 billion for the community-based funding under the so-called SML (small, medium, large) project, one of the populist policies of the Thaksin regime that won the heart of the Thai rural villagers.

Somchai chaired the ceremony to embark on the project at Lanna Technology University in Chiang Mai's Doi Saket District. Deputy Prime Minister Dr Olarn Chaiprawa also attended the event.

Somchai said he continued the concept of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra because he believed this project was one of the policies that proven useful to Thais as it aimed at improving potential of villages to foster growth and development.

"Every baht and satang are used with transparency with no politician enjoying any conflict of interest from the project,'' he said.

Somchai then push the button of the ATM machine to transfer the fund to the Government Savings Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.

Seventy six lamps were floated into the sky as a gesture of goodwill that the fund would reach 27,699 villages and communites in all 76 provinces across the country.
