Rangers kill two militants in gunfight

Security forces killed two suspected Malay Muslim separatists in a shootout yesterday in a highly contested Banang Sata district in Yala province.

The combined forces of 30 officers on Friday morning sealed off a Ban Bunang Buto in Tambon Tam Talu looking for a suspected separatists.

The team came across five young men trying to flee the village as security forces entered the premises.

One fired at the officer, kicking off a tenminute gunfight. Authorities identified the dead suspect as Usman Salideh, 22, and Ubdee Deng, 21, both residents of Banang Sata district. The two corps were about 100 metres apart.

Meanwhile, in Narathiwat's Bacho district, a roadside bomb went off, injuring three paramilitary rangers while on a routine patrol with his unit.

The three injured rangers were indentified as Teerawut Insongdej and Saman Daohleh and Jeerasak Mernwai.

Authorities said the explosive was set off remotely by mobile phone, thus, suggesting that the bomber was within the line of vision.

The assault came two days after suspected separatist militants killed five civilians and burnt down a school, following twin bomb blasts which wounded 74 people a day earlier in Yala province  what the police said was one of the biggest assaults on civilians since the rebellion flared in early 2004.
