First Thai private wind-power plant

SGC Wind Energy

SGC Wind Energy has decided to develop the country's first private wind-power plant in Nakhon Si Thammarat at an estimated cost of Bt2.3 billion after spending two years analysing the project.

"We have been studying the opportunity and the government's policy in this business for the last couple years. Now we think it's time for the investment. Once this pilot project succeeds, more opportunity will follow," managing director CA Kumaresan said yesterday.

The wind-turbine generator with 30 megawatts of total installed capacity will be located along the Huasai coastline with the best wind conditions, near the government's wind-power plant. Its annual energy output is estimated to be 4,426,192-kilowatt hours.

A 20-year power purchasing agreement, including an adder of Bt3.5 per kilowatt hour for the first 10 years, would be signed with the Provincial Electricity Authority by year-end. Eco Securities, the world's largest dedicated carbon- trading firm, was appointed yesterday as its carbon development mechanism (CDM) adviser.

This project is designed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 50,000 tonnes a year.
