Mae Sot hit by floods

Following hours of heavy rain since Friday night, forest floodwater yesterday morning ravaged many areas of Tak's Mae Sot district, including the Muang Mae Sot Municipality where 30,000 residents suffered nearly 1.5-metre-deep flood.

With many roads and residential areas submerged, the Mae Sot police station also had to evacuate detainees from its holding cell due to rising water. Local officials were dispatched to aid affected residents with relief bags and help them build sandbag walls.

Many villages in Tambon Phrathat Phadaeng and Tambon Mae Ku were also affected by the downpour-triggered flood and overflows from water sources, including Ban Hua Fai Reservoir spilling 80 centimetres high of flooding. With some areas inundated under one-metre deep water, local officials rushed to send food and relief bags to assist the victims.

In related news, two residents of Tambon Wat Sai in Muang Nakhon Sawan were killed yesterday morning in floodwater. Phisanu Jannoi, 33, and Niran Toykerd, 39, tried to fix the sandbag barriers along the rising Ping River when the strong currents swept them away and their bodies were retrieved later.
