Dutch Mill plans jv operation in India

Dutch Mill Group plans to open a joint-venture dairy plant in India in three years as it strives to become the leading dairy manufacturer in Asia.

Chairman Teerayuth Chaisaw-angwong said yesterday that the company had set up a representative office in Chennai at the end of last year to conduct a market feasibility study.

The company has been approached by three Indian dairy manufacturers but has not chosen a partner yet because it has not decided on the stakes in the joint venture.

The company wants to hold at least 60 per cent.

The company will initially invest US$6 million (Bt212 million) to set up a small dairy plant producing 30,000 tonnes a year.

It will then gradually increase its capacity to 200,000 tonnes in the future.

The Indian factory expects to recruit 600 workers and 2,000 sales representatives.

As it has to compete with world-class dairy brands there, the company plans to penetrate the provinces before entering the major cities.

Exports to Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the Philippines have reached Bt250 million or 5 per cent of its total sales.

The company aims to increase the share of exports to 15 per cent within the next three years by foraying into new international markets.

Among the markets with high purchasing power it is targeting are Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and Maldives.
