
General Songkitti Jakkabatra said the monarchy was above politics and should not be dragged into the ongoing conflict.
"I would like to appeal against any reference to the monarchy for political reasons," Songkitti said. "The monarchy deserves high reverence from us, our children and our grandchildren."
He also called for cooperation among Thais to face a worsening global economic downturn. Songkitti said the feuding sides should be less arrogant and come to a compromise .
"We should end it now by turning to each other and talking amicably," he advised
However, Songkitti said it was not the military's duty to mediate in any feuds.
In a related development, Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat yesterday denied that his government was slow in reacting to a campaign to smear the monarchy.
"The government will definitely take action against anyone involved. There are laws and authorities responsible. Everybody must pay attention. Those involved may have done so for personal gain," said the premier.
