New Bangkok unit for Tata Consultancy Service

Tata Consultancy Service has set up a representative office in Bangkok to provide IT and business process outsourcing (BPO) services to help large corporations invest in IT efficiently and at a lower cost.

Girija Pande, executive vice president and head of Tata Consultancy Services Asia Pacific, said Tata Consultancy Service (Thailand) had registered capital of Bt8 million and a cash flow of Bt34 million. The company is a 100-per-cent subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services Asia Pacific.

Its main services - IT services such as IT consulting, IT configuration, IT implementation, IT maintenance and support, and business process outsourcing service - are envisioned to help Thai corporations spend less on IT investment in the long term.

Its target customers include the financial and banking, telecommunication, government and manufacturing sectors.

"IT spending in Asia-Pacific is still growing. We have not yet seen the economic effect on IT spending in this region … not yet seen reduction in IT spending in Asia. Especially, most IT services and BPO services normally are long-term contracts, around three to five years, that also have not affected our revenue for now," said Pande.

He said Thailand was one of the company's key emerging countries in the region. Tata Group has many investments in the country, not only in the IT business but also in the automobile, steel and hospitality sectors.

"We have invested Bt2.5 billion in Thailand Tata businesses here, including Tata Steel, Tata Automobile and TCS (Thailand), and employ around 2,000 people. We are committed to continuing our business expansion and investment for TCS (Thailand). We now have 42 people, almost of them are local. We plan to increase our employees here to 100 by next year. We try to hire more local people in each county we are in," said Pande.

Tata Consultancy Service (Thailand)'s country manager, Sorasak Likitrujanont, said the company currently had eight customers such as NXP Semiconductor, Tata Steel, ING GE and Citi Bank.

"Some of them were transferred from Tata Consultancy Services Asia Pacific. At the initial stage, a portion of customers in Thailand would be multinational companies who were transferred from the parent company, but in the near future we will have more local companies," said Sorasak.

For BPO services, the firm focuses only on the insurance sector. It provides BPO services through First Tech, a 20:80 joint venture between Tata Consultancy Services Asia Pacific and Thai Re-Insurance.

"In the future, we plan to expand BPO service to other industries. Right now, we have around two customers using our BPO service," said Sorasak.
