Thai govt may move Asean Summit to Chiang Mai

Thailand is readly to host the 14th Asean Summit in December but is considering whether to move the venue to Chiang Mai, a Thai Foreign Ministry source said.

Asean's grouping comprised Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand

The summit was initially planned to be held at Centara Grand Hotel in Bangkok from December 14 to 18.

However the political tensions particularly anti-government protest which has occupied the Government for months have forced the government to reconsider the plan.

The same source said the foreign ministry was informed by the government that the meeting venue may have to move to Chiang Mai.

"FM officials already travelled to Chiang Mai to check the venue. The Asean member states will be informed of Thai government's decision next week," the source said.

Chiang Mai is a home town of convicted ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra and political base of incumbent PM Somchai Wongsawat, who is Thaksin's brother-in-law.

Pro-government support in this northern province is also strong.
