Sukhompong to head pre-CDA panel

PM's Office Minister Sukhumpong Ngonkham will head a legislative panel tasked with drafting a report on the formation of a Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) to bring about political reform.

Sukhumpong has been entrusted with the task following a meeting yesterday of political parties with House seats. The Democrats boycotted the meeting to protest the violent crackdown on protesters on October 7.

The Sukhumpong report, which will spell out the composition of the CDA, is expected to be completed by Monday. It will then be reviewed by House Speaker Chai Chidchob.

After receiving the report, Chai is scheduled to chair a quadripartite meeting involving the prime minister, the Senate Speaker and the opposition leader to outline the legislative work necessary to amend the charter's Article 291 to pave way for the CDA to come into existence.

It remains unclear whether Opposition Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva will take part in the four-way meeting following his boycott of yesterday's session.

Abhisit attended an earlier meeting on October 6, but renounced his involvement in the process the following day.
