Transport Ministry set for top-level

The Nation

Transport Minister Santi Prompat will today propose to the Cabinet a reshuffle of some senior government officials in response to the fiscal-2009 budget.

If approved, this will be the ministry's second reshuffle since one in August under the government of former prime minister Samak Sundaravej.

A ministry source said that this time, the proposal would involve the Marine, Land Transport and Rural Roads departments.

The source said the departments needed new directors-general to continue major projects like closed-circuit television (CCTV) installation at Klong Toei and Laem Chabang ports, the leasing of 4,000 compressed natural-gas-for-vehicle (CNG) buses and dust-free roads.

Santi will propose Marine Department director-general Prasong Tanmaneewattana as ministry inspector-general and name deputy permanent secretary Chalor Kotcharat to succeed Prasong, said the source.

The source said the new director-general of the Marine Department was expected to oversee the procurement of 102 CCTVs worth Bt263 million for Klong Toei and Laem Chabang ports.

For the Land Transport Department, the ministry will propose Chairat Sa-nguansue, presently both deputy and acting director-general, as the new director-general.

The source said the ministry wanted the department's new director-general to push for the leasing of the 4,000 CNG buses.

The transport minister will also appoint Vicharn Kunakulswadi, presently both deputy and acting director-general of the Rural Roads Department, to become that department's new director-general. He will be expected to accelerate implementation of the Bt34-billion, 7,200-kilometre dust-free road project.
