PAD supporters throng Govt House

Several hundred supporters from the provinces yesterday joined the People's Alliance for Democracy at Government House to show their anger at the recent arrests of two PAD leaders.

The protesters gathering inside the compound swelled to almost 20,000, but no serious incident was reported besides the usual speeches by protest leaders, Metropolitan Police commissioner Lt-General Suchat Muenkaew said.

PAD leader Chamlong Srimuang was arrested on Sunday while waiting to cast his vote for Bangkok governor, two days after the arrest of another PAD leader, Chaiwat Sinsuwong.

Anti-government groups from many parts of the country arrived at the rally site by train or chartered bus in the morning to offer their moral support.

The PAD has laid siege to Government House since late August, forcing the prime minister, his deputies and staff to work out of temporary offices in Don Mueang Airport.
