Obstacles await Apirak

The path leading to the capital's governorship is strewn with obstacles as Apirak Kosayodhin faces more complaints and the Bangkok Election Commission has asked the Election Commission to hold off on approving the vote results.

Moreover, the National Counter-Corruption Commission has said that Apirak's term could be suspended or even face legal problems if the NCCC finds him involved in irregularities in Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's projects.

Meanwhile, fellow candidate Chuwit Kamolvisit said he would file a complaint because an interview with Apirak was aired on Modernine TV channel early on Sunday. Law prohibits any campaigning from 6pm on the eve of Election Day.

Democrat election director Ong-art Klampaiboon said neither the party nor Apirak had anything to do with the timing of the broadcast. However, Chuwit said the television station should be held responsible because airing the interview only gave Apirak an unfair advantage.

Bangkok Election Commission chairman Ping Rungsamai said he had submitted the investigation report and made recommendations on Apirak allegedly using BMA public relations posters in his election campaign.

However, the city's EC panel has not completed the investigation into Apirak allegedly distributing Wi-Fi cards to residents. This probe should be completed in the next seven days. Another candidate, who asked not to be named, has also filed a complaint against Apirak, saying his posters were larger than allowed by law.

NCCC member Somlak Judkrabuanphol said the NCCC was investigating cases against Apirak including irregularities in the BMA road-construction projects and the purchase of fire trucks.

If the NCCC finds Apirak guilty but is uncertain if he should be suspended, it would ask the Constitution Court for advice, she said.
