UN chief to call Thai PM over Sudan

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon will have a telephone conversation with Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat on Monday evening to talk about dispatch of Thai troops to Sudan, Thai Foreign Minister Sompong Amornwiwat said.

Ban is expected to call Somchai at 8pm, said Sompong.

Thailand has earlier agreed to send a battlalion of Thai troops to join UN peacekeepers to Sudan's war-torn Darfur. However the dispatch had to get permission from Sudan first.

Sompong said UN chief's move came after Sudan's government announced recently that it is ready to work with the international community to improve the security situation in the Darfur region.

"Therefore Ban wishes to confirm the Thai commitment to send the Thai troops to Sudan," he said.

The Thai troops will join troops of Union of Africa and joint peacekeeping forces.

The Thai troops are expected to travel to Sudan in January next year.
