Shippers urged to forego hike

The Internal Trade Department has called on major shippers to forego fee hikes this year, as it would cause hardship for exporters already struggling from a slowing world economy and high export competition.

"Exports are one of the major export drivers. A rise in service charges will create difficulties for the Kingdom," Yangyong Phuangrach, director-general of the department, said yesterday.

The timing is bad and if those shippers do not cooperate on delaying price changes, the Commerce Ministry may have to issue regulations to prevent them from charging more, he said.

The department has received complaints from exporters that shippers will soon try to make a case for raising the document preparation fee by 60 per cent. The document fee would be upped for the first time since 2004 from Bt500 to Bt800 per shipment, while THC costs would rise from Bt2,600 to Bt2,770-Bt3,930 per 20-foot container, and from Bt3,900 to Bt4,200-Bt4,560 for a 40-foot container.
