SU SIFE won the 2008 SIFE Thailand National competition earli
¬er this year, earning the team a slot at the SIFE World Cup, which takes place at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exposition Centre in Singapore.More than 2,000 people will attend the global competition. SIFE is a glob¬al nonprofit organisation that mobilises university students to create economic opportunities for others while discovering their own potential.
SIFE students form teams on their university campuses and develop in their communities outreach projects that centre on entrepreneurship, mar¬ket economics, business ethics, suc¬cess skills and finance.
At the 2008 SIFE World Cup, the top SIFE teams in the world will pres¬ent the results of their outreach proj¬ects for determination of which teams have made the most impact on their communities.
Asst Prof Phitak Siriwong, SU SIFE Thailand team faculty adviser, who leads the team in Singapore, said:
"This is a great challenge and experience for all our students and faculty advisers to participate in the SIFE World Cup in Singapore. We are honoured to repre¬sent Thailand and share our mean¬ingful outreach project on the global stage."Above winning or losing, we hope our project, 'Small Roots to Large Leaves', helps improve the lives of vil
¬lagers and develops the sixth mangrove resources development area to pre¬serve the ecosystem and boost tourism for the community. Our dream is to encourage our target area to become a role model for other mangrove stations in Thailand. After this competition, we hope other countries will see the effort and potential of Thai students."Last year, the SIFE team from La Sierra University, California, took top honours in the SIFE World Cup in New York. The team worked to help a group of women in Ethiopia launch a sewing company to manufacture medical scrubs.
Through a local partner organisation, the International Medical Aid Association, a plant for manufacturing the scrubs is being built, creating 60 new jobs and providing a constant stream of income to an Ethiopian village. The project demonstrates the strategic approach to creating multiphase projects that create sustainable results.
SIFE started in Thailand in 2005. Four national expositions have taken place, with 23 active SIFE teams across 12 provinces throughout the country.
SIFE Thailand's main sponsors include the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the KPMG Phoomchai Group, The Nation and HSBC.
