McCormick spices up production capacity

Spice and flavouring manufacturer McCormick (Thailand) has expanded its production capacity to serve rising demand in the US and Europe despite the global economic slowdown.

It has spent Bt18.5 million to boost production capacity from 2,199 tonnes a year to 3,730 tonnes. The company's plant is located on the Eastern Seaboard in Rayong province.

Board of Investment secretary-general Satit Chanjavanakul said Thailand had a strong potential to become a production hub for spices and flavourings.

The company plans to persuade more global firms in the industry to expand their business here. It will use about Bt98 million worth of local raw materials annually to produce its products and supply them to leading fast-food operators like McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut, he said.

McCormick (Thailand) is a subsidiary of McCormick & Co, a leading global manufacturer and distributor of spices, seasonings and flavourings to the food industry, including retail outlets, food manufacturers and food-service businesses in more than 100 countries worldwide.

National Food Institute (NFI) executive director Yuthasak Supasorn said the value of the Kingdom's food-flavouring exports would increase 20 per cent this year from Bt8.076 billion last year, due mainly to higher prices.
