Somchai may face bribery probe
Weera Somkwamkid, chairman of the People Network against Corruption, on Tuesday said he would file a complaint with Crime Suppression Police against Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat for allegedly trying to bribe Constitution Court judges in the assets concealment case against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Somchai was then Justice Minsitry permanent secretary when Thaksin stood trial in 2001 defending himself against charges that he concealed his wealth.
The National Counter Corruption Commission ruled 8-1 in December 2000 that Thaksin was guilty of deliberately hiding assets in his asset declarations in 1997 and 1998.
The Constitutional Court acquitted Thaksin in August 2001. The judges ruled 8-7 rejecting an indictment against Thaksin that accused him of placing millions of dollars worth of his stocks in the names of his family members and servants in an attempt to mislead regulators and to avoid paying taxes.
Thaksin admitted making the share transfers to his maid, chauffeur and others but said he did it because of an 'honest mistake'. The decision allowed Thaksin to continue to lead the country.
