First day of work for new Cabinet

The Somchai government is the first administration that cannot access Government House despite its legitimacy and authority. One month ago the People's Alliance for Democracy seized the premises and has camped there ever since as a protest against the government led by the People Power Party.

The Cabinet yesterday met for the first time at the Air Force's military airport at Don Mueang before taking an oath of allegiance before His Majesty the King at Klai Kangwon Palace.

PM's Office Minister Sukhumpong Ngonkam, a first time minister, was the first to arrive at the airport, expressing regret that the Cabinet did not have the chance to take group pictures with the view of Government House as the backdrop. He said he came one hour early because he feared he might get lost and arrive late.Another new face was Deputy Transport Minister Warawuth Silapa-archa. Unknown as he was, security officials at the airport refused to let him in when he arrived at his office at Don Mueang Airport, which has been modified as a temporary workplace for the government. He had to explain he was a minister. Nevertheless, he too was excited about his first day. He appeared shy when he was greeted by reporters.

There was a little commotion when teams working for three of the deputy prime ministers could not reserve any office for their bosses because the team of Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart had earlier booked three VIP rooms for Sanan and themselves so they could work closely with their boss.

Officials at the airport needed to explain to Sanan's team that they had to leave because only Sanan was entitled to a VIP room and his team had to work on the fourth floor of the airport's building.
