Suvarnabhumi Party: a newcomer to the political scene

The Suvarnabhumi Party has registered itself as the political party and commenced to establish its mass movement within the one-year deadline, the Election Commission said on Wednesday.

The party is under the leadership of Nitipoom Naowarat, a newspaper columnist-turned-politician. Nitipoom is a former senator who did not assume office due to the 2006 coup. He used to run in the Bangkok gubernatorial race in 2004.

The newly-registered party is obliged to form the party executive board, enroll a minimum of 5,000 members and establish at least one party branch per region in one year. The party memberships have to be spreaded out to cover every region.

As of September 15, Thailand has 66 political parties with the combined memberships of 5,817,895 people. The parties are managed by 897 executives and boast 392 branches.
