The FIA's International Court of Appeal met Monday in Paris to rule on the decision by officials to penalise Hamilton for what they considered gaining an unfair advantage for his overtaking manoeuvre against world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
The penalty dropped Hamilton from first to third place - with the original second-place finisher Massa declared the race winner - and caused the British driver to lose four Formula One world championship points.
However, if the 23-year-old wins the appeal, Hamilton's championship lead over Massa, who was declared the winner at Spa Francorchamps, will be increased from one to seven points with just four races remaining.
Among the issues which the FIA court has to consider are whether the appeal is admissible, as F1 rules do not allow teams to appeal against drive-through penalties and if Hamilton sufficiently surrendered the advantage he had gained when cutting the chicane.
The F1 season continues this weekend with the Singapore Grand Prix.
