BORDER TRADE
Burgeoning border trade in Chiang Saen
By The Nation
Thailand's Chiang Saen checkpoint witnessed an increase in border trade in the first nine months of the 2008 fiscal year, from Bt4.4 billion in 2007 to Bt5.75 billion. At the end of the fiscal year, the value could reach Bt6 billion, said Vinai Chinthongprasert, a customs officer.
Thailand imported products worth Bt797 million during the nine months, up 4 per cent on year. Top products are vegetables and fruits. Thailand exported Bt4.96 billion, up 37 per cent on year, thanks to the higher exports of smoked rubber.
Though the 2008 export value should expand 40 per cent on year, the 2009 level is expected to remain close to the 2008 level due to global economic slowdown and falling demand for dried longan in China.
