Newin faction agrees to vote for Somchai
The Newin Faction in the People Power Party (PPP) on Tuesday said it would toe the party line and vote for Somchai Wongsawat as PM tomorrow.
In its second statement, the group comprising 73 MPs addressed in a press conference after joining the PPP meeting in the afternoon.
The about-turn decision came one day after it issued its first statement that they would exercise their MP constitutional right not to comply with the party’s resolution to vote for Somchai as PM.
PPP Roi Et MP Niramit Sujaree on Tuesday rejected reports that Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban lobbied 73 MPs of Newin faction to defect the PPP and form a government with the Democrats.
He said all northeastern MPs had faith in the PPP policies and if they switch camps they may not get elected again. He said he believed the Opposition released the reports in attempt to vie for nomination of its own PM.
He was speaking after the meeting of the faction in the morning before the party meeting in the afternoon. Only a few members of Newin faction joined the meeting.
Niramit denied that his faction threatened to boycott the party's resolution to nominate Somchai Wongsawat as PM because they want to bargain for more powerful Cabinet seats.
