Newin faction threatens to boycott Somchai nomination
The second attempt by the People Power Party (PPP) to nominate a new Prime Minister may suffer another blow as Newin Chidchob faction has threatened to boycott the party’s resolution to nominate Somchai Wongsawat as the PM.
The Newin faction has been pushing for PPP secretary-general Surapong Suebwonglee as the new PM candidate after its attempt to re-nominate PPP leader Samak Sundaravej as PM was rejected by other factions and the five coalition parties last Friday. They refused to attend House meeting causing lack of House quorum.
PPP Nakhon Ratchasima MP Bunchong Wongtrairat, a leader of Newin faction announced in a press conference after the PPP’s executive board resolved to nominate Somchai calling for the review of the resolution before House called a vote for PM nomination tomorrow (Wednesday.)
Bunchong submitted a list of 73 signatures of PPP MPs to endorse their intention to issue demands that the PM candidate must not create confrontation and conflict. The group urged the party to heed the public opinion over who should be the next PM and disapproved of the move to issue law to grant amnesty of the 111 former executives of the Thai Rak Thai Party.
PPP Nakhon Phanom MP Supachai Phothisu, another member under Newin faction said if the party executive board refused to review the resolution, his group would exercise their rights guaranteed by the Constitution to decide on their own on the PM nomination.
Bunchong refused to say if his group wanted to nominate Surapong as the PM candidate.
PPP deputy leader Kan Tienkawe said many groups in the party agreed that those who support Somchai as PM should join in Puea Thai Party if the PPP is dissolved. Those who did not support Somchai may move to other parties.
