Hat Yai Butterworth

Rail services from Thailand's southern commercial hub of Hat Yai to the Malaysian town of Butterworth resumed yesterday.

They had been suspended for two weeks following a strike by State Railway of Thailand workers.

Although most train services in the South have returned to normal, passengers are few. The public had been told full services would resume today, according to Hat Yai station manager Tassanai Sooksawas.

Tassanai said the two daily servic¬es between Bangkok and Butterworth via Hat Yai were back to normal, as were rapidtrain services from Hat Yai to the capital, the staterun TNA news agency reported.

All services are expected to resume today.

There will be thorough inspections of track and rolling stock first.

Most services were suspended on September 1 as a result of a national railway workers strike in sympathy of antigovernment protests.

Traffic was slow at the rail station in Rangae, Narathiwat, which borders Malaysia, as passengers were unaware trains were running again.

Station manager Manop Muendej expected more passengers last night and today.
