Tourism operators welcome lift of state of emergency

The tourism industry would benefit from the revocation of the state of emergency, as more foreign visitors should return to Thailand, said the Krabi Tourist Association president Amarit Siripornjuthakul.

He said the sentiment in the provinces along the Andaman Coast has been lifted but the government should work more in informing the world that things in Thailand turn to normal and the tourism industry is ready to accommodate visitors.

Itthirit Kinglek, the owner of Ao Nang Prince Ville Resort, said that while the state of emergency was in place, about 10-20 per cent of booking at the resort had been cancelled. He said the resort has won back some guests.

Chinaphat Mannae, manager of Krabi Southern Free Shop, said the benefits of the revocation remain unclear. She said 70-80 per cent of clients have disappeared during the political instability which included the airport seize as well as the state of emergency.

Visut Buachum, tourism bureau chief in Mae Hong Son, said more tour packages have been sold to foreign investors after the lift of the state of emergency. He noted that if the news did not spread as fast as expected, business operators may need to come up with promotions and public relations.

"Overall, the situation is not quite worrisome. Though the number of foreign tourists is declining, the number of newcomers has been rising. This should offset some losses," he said.
