Samak tells cabinet not to worry

Prime minister Samak Sundaravej early yesterday told ministers during his mobile Cabinet meeting not to worry about his disqualification case to be ruled by the Constitution Court later in the day.

The ministers showed their support for him.

He also thanked officers for holding the meeting. He sent regards to Chart Thai Party leader Banharn Silapa-archa through Agriculture Minister Somsak Prissanananthakul and said the next mobile meeting would take place in Suphan Buri.

After the mobile Cabinet meeting in Udon Thani, Samak greeted reporters with a few sentences but declined to comment prior to the Constitution Court's ruling. He changed his plan to fly back to Bangkok, returning by car instead.

Deputy Public Health Minister Wicharn Meenchainant said Bangkok MPs and most ministers he had talked to agreed to support Samak for the prime minister's post.

Samak was not corrupt for hosting television programmes, Wicharn said. He could also be voted back into the post.

When asked about possible political turmoil if Samak were re-elected as prime minister, Wicharn said everyone should obey the law.

"May I ask whether we no longer comply with the law? If not, will we go along everything the People's Alliance for Democracy wants? Will we ask them for everything? That's not right. When we adopt democracy, we should follow majority rule," he said.

He said the People Power Party had not discussed who would replace Samak, because it was confident Samak would be re-elected as prime minister.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Anusorn Wongwan said Samak did not look worried during the meeting. People Power Party MPs agreed to comply with the court's ruling and also the party's later resolution.
