Telecom services to be IP-based by 2012

The telecommunications-regulating body intends to complete its policies governing the upgrade of the Kingdom's telecom network to the Internet-protocol-based Next Generation Network (NGN) this year

The telecommunications-regulating body intends to complete its policies governing the upgrade of the Kingdom's telecom network to the Internet-protocol-based Next Generation Network (NGN) this year.

As per its road map, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) wants each telecom service network to use NGN technology by 2012. Chulalongkorn University's Unisearch research centre was commissioned to come up with the road map.

The upgrade will cost an estimated Bt100 billion, NTC member Prasit Prapinmongkolkarn said yesterday.

NGN technology will enable telecom operators to provide faster and better services with higher cost efficiency, he said. It will also enable the operators to provide better third-generation mobile broadband services.

Road maps used by foreign telecom operators indicate it will take four to six years to finish the upgrades, Prasit added.
