Court hears on seize order of Bt12 billion
The Central Administrative Court on Thursday commenced a closed-door trail on the seize order of the Revenue Department and the freeze order of the now-defunct Assets Examination Committee (AEC) on the Bt12 billion of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's children.
Siam Commercial Bank brought the case to the court after the Revenue Department ordered the bank to unfreeze the Bt12 billion of Panthongtae and Pinthongta Shinawatra, deposited with the bank.
The AEC had ordered the freezing of all bank accounts and the assets of Thaksin's family totalling Bt 76 billion following its corruption investigation. The Office of the Attorney General has already filed the suit with court to seize the Bt76 billion so it belongs to the country on the grounds that Thaksin was unusually rich.
The Revenue Department last month sent a memorandum instructing Siam Commercial Bank to release Bt12 billion to settle tax liabilities owed to the department by Thaksin's estate.
Critics raised suspicions that there was a political order to use the tax collection as a pretext to cancel the freeze. If the tax payment is made on behalf of the family by the bank, it could lead to the unlocking of Thaksin's wealth that has been frozen.
