PM says state of emergency is a lenient measure

PRIME MINISTER Samak Sundaravej announced a state of emergency at 9am yesterday. Here is part of his statement:

"Last night, a regrettable situation took place. I insist that I have no desire to see this sort of thing happen. I intend to solve the problem. I promise all of you I will be moderate and patient. What happened at Makkhawan Bridge is heartbreaking.

"How much more trouble do you want? An unforeseen incident happened. I was informed about what happened before I went to bed. I did not sleep at all night. I stayed up all night to follow the situation.

"A thorough investigation will be launched. I want to make that clear so that I will not be accused of being behind the incident. When the situation reaches this point, I have no alternative. I have chosen the least harsh measure and that is imposing a state of emergency in Bangkok to end this problem.

"I beg you all. This is about the country. Do not let your hatred of me - why, I have no idea - lead to more protesters gathering. I will keep this bitterness in my heart and I will learn in the future what happens in this country and why people who work for the country are detested by society.

"They show hatred and revenge as if I was evil. On the contrary, people who cause trouble for society never get mentioned. It is really sad for politicians and people who want to solve problems. I can be tolerant.

"Once a situation happens, I will make a decision and I will be careful. I do not make decisions on my own. Those involved in this took two hours to make the decision. I have done this to diffuse the crisis and for everything to return to normal.

"I insist this will not affect the way of life of people countrywide. They can continue their lives as normal. I cannot diffuse the crisis in any other way. I need to use the tools I have. This will done quickly and may have some consequences. Please be patient.

"I make this announcement to seek understanding. I have a duty to keep peace and order and I urge all parties to take notice. I ask all people to cooperate. Officials will take action against people who call for uprising and turmoil. This can no longer be allowed because of the state of emergency.

"To the 43 state-enterprises unions that want to create chaos, I ask them if I am really evil? Have you ever thought what effect it will have on the country if you succeed? Who will replace us?

"People who cause this problem say if the government resigns, the problem will not end. They say they want a new system of rule and want to topple the current system. Why don't people understand?

"They have shown their colours. That is why we requested arrest warrants from the court. I thought everything would end, but it was not that way."
