Cornered community

Trapped between anti and progovernment factions, members of the Wat Som II community is on fearful after bloody street fighting erupted early yesterday.

"I have to be on guard. There are many children and women in the community," a 63-year-old taxi motorcyclist says.

Identifying himself only as Piak, the man says he's "deeply concerned" someone will set his community on fire, and then blame the other side.

"I want peace," Piak says.

The community is located near the Makkhawan Bridge, where the People's Alliance for Democracy has been gathered to demonstrate against the government for months.

Early yesterday, progov¬ernment demonstrators and PAD protesters moved to the bridge and clashed.

One man was killed and several others injured.

Community residents say progovernment demonstra¬tors were carrying Molotov cocktails.

Sab, 29, says, "I don't want Thais to kill each other. We speak the same language. Why don't they just talk to find a way out of the current situation?" he says.
