Growing call for Samak's resignation

A large number of advocacy groups on Tuesday called for the resignation of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej in order to hold him accountable for the fatal clash between opposing crowds before the government declared a state of emergency.

Many, including Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, saw the clash as being staged to justify the enforcement of the emergency decree.

The rural doctors, the workers of 43 state enterprises, a group of 50 senators and the students from Khon Kaen University and National Institution for Development Administration are among the groups to demand Samak to step down.

The advocacy groups urged coalition parties to apply pressure on Samak by quitting the coalition alliance. They also called on Army chief General Anupong Paochinda not to use force to crack down on protesters.

The National Human Rights Commission issued a statement opposing the state of emergency declared over Bangkok on grounds that draconian security measures would inflame the situation.

Thammasat University rector Suraphol Nitikraipot suggested for the House dissolution to defuse tensions.
